Art as a tool for social change
Art is a major vehicle for cultures and stories. It has the potential to transform every one of us. It opens us to the world around us.
By choosing to bring together and exhibit artistic testimonials that represent the realities of people affected by discrimination, rejection, and stigmatization, we took a gamble. We gambled that through visual art, these realities could be demystified, explained, and that audiences would not be hampered by social prejudice, but would admire the works, and feel and hear their life stories – our life stories.
The literature on this subject confirms that the social role of art exhibitions is both educational and political. Educational, because art exhibitions inform and teach the population about past or present events, and political, because art exhibitions create new social ties between people and new ways to critique dominant representations.
The works exhibited here spark connections that are moving, personal, human. The audience enters a dialogue: by exploring the artists’ personal and intimate stories, we engage in thinking about our own experiences.
