Workshop: Body Mapping and Side Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy

Marilou Gagnon, RN, PhD, associate Professor, School of Nursing, University of Ottawa will facilitate a body mapping worshop on March 31, 2017. This technique can help to better understand the negatives effects of HAART

The workshop will take place from 3-5 pm at the offices of AIDS Community Care Montreal – SIDA bénévoles Montréal (ACCM), 2075 Plessis.

Abstract: Body mapping is an arts-based participatory method that can be used for self-reflective, therapeutic, and/or research purposes. It is particularly useful when trying to gain a deeper understanding of complex and meaningful experiences such as being sick (i.e., eating disorders, chronic pain, HIV), taking medications, living with side effects, and going through a major life event (i.e., trauma, migration, abuse). Body mapping takes the real-life size drawing of the body as its starting point and allows participants to tell their own story. In this workshop, we will discuss lessons learned from using body mapping as a tool to better understand the experience of side effects. More specifically, we will describe the methodological (e.g., how to gather and analyze the stories), ethical (e.g., how to obtain consent, how to use the body map, how to ensure confidentiality, potential risks and benefits, and rights of participants), and practical implications (e.g., how to prepare, what to use, how to document the process, etc.) of using body mapping.
