Emerging Voices of Intersex People

The Research Project

Emerging Voices of Intersex People: Expressing experiences, bodies, and identities is a participatory research project for intersex people who want to share their realities through art and language.

The project is led by Janik Bastien-Charlebois, Professor in the Sociology Department at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), who works from a non-pathologizing perspective toward intersex people.

Funded by the Fonds québecois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC), the project is a collaborative research in partnership with the Organisation internationale des Intersexes – Francophonie (OII-Francophonie).

Activities

Phase I

Compile and share cultural works by intersex people and facilitate their consultation.. These works can be about intersex people's relationship with the body, sex, gender, or identity.

How to submit cultural work? We are currently soliciting works by intersex people (essays, poems, paintings, testimonials, comics, videos, etc.) to present on this website.

Phase II

Collect stories by intersex people about their relationship to the body and (their) identities, as well as their ideas for the social change.

How to participate in an interview? We are looking for intersex people who wish to participate in an individual or group interview, as preferred by the participants. Individual interviews will last approximately one and a half hours (1h 30m). Group interviews are planned to be three hours long (3h).
